           History

1. the Rovere fortress

The present structure built by the noble family of the Rovere dates back to the 16th century and was built on the first fortress of the Malatesta in 1450 which contains the tower erected around 1350 on the remains of another defensive tower of the Roman era (3rd century)

2. Palazzetto Baviera, Lions’ Fountain and Palazzo of Duca

The small palace of the 15th century with splendid plaster (?) ceilings done in the second half of the 16th century by Ferderici Brandani; the fountain built with red marble in 1602 is situated In front of the Duke’s palace

3. the Cathedral

The cathedral with its front in neoclassical style was built in 1877; inside it a statue commemorates Pope  Pius IX who was born at Senigallia in the Mastai palace behind the town hall.

4. Round Forum

The building dates back to 1837 and has always been used as a market for fruit, vegetables and flowers.

5. The Ercolani Colonnades

Built between 1746 and 1805, they are a testimony of an epoch of great splendour and commercial success of the town.

6/6a. the Lambertina Gate and the Mazzini Gate
The Lambertina gate was built in the 18th century with beautiful stone from Istria is dedicated to Pope Benedict XVI. The Mazzini gate Set up in the second half of the 18th century when the town was enlarged a second time, it is presented here in a photo. 
7. Town Hall and Curch of Holy Cross

Built in the first years of the 17 century by Duke Francesco Maria II. In front of the building You will find the Neptune Fountain which dates back to Roman times. A few yards from the Square is situated the splendid Church of the Holy Cross (17th century)  

8. The "La Fenice" Theatre

Famous theatre, destroyed by the 1930 earthquake and in  World War II. During reconstruction Roman remains were found that are exhibited.

9. Fountain of the Geese

Beautiful octagonal fountain in white rock, the ducks commemorate the draining of swamps south of the town.

10. the Rotonda

Built in 1933 on an 19th century wooden platform, it has today become Senigallia’s Symbol. The beach with its fine golden sand, renown as “Velvet Beach” attracts Tourists.

11. Palazzo Mastai and Pius IX. Museum
Built in the early 17th century, it today houses precious relics of Pope Pius IX who was born here on May 13th, 1792.
12. Dawn fishing
Who likes this maritime tradition can see the fishing boats return with their catch every morning at dawn.
